Q. Hello, Mr. Pearson and Ms. Shaw,
My name is Domenic. I have a serious question. I wrote to this e-mail address hoping you would receive it.
I have had many outbreaks of herpes. I also have a couple of friends who also suffer from this depressing ailment. I have been to doctors who gave me Valtrex and another medication. Is there anything I can do to rid myself of medication for this illness? There is no one to talk to about this, and the doctors just seem to want to keep me on meds.
I remember when you both used to appear on the Merv Griffin show—I really learned a lot. I was the first person in my area to order L-Arginine and L-Ornithine back then, which you often talked about. People would look at me like I was crazy when I told them how I lost 4 inches off my waist. I have a lot of respect for you both, and if you could give me an answer to my problem, I would really be happy. I’m looking for whatever supplement I would need to control or be rid of this condition.
Can You Help? I really hope you get this e-mail and that it’s not another scam to sell me unwanted vitamins from some money hungry salesperson who reads this and gets a good laugh.

A. Dear Domenic,
First, Herpes is no laughing matter. Durk and Sandy passed your inquiry on to me. They know that I often use many of their concepts in my practice. Durk and Sandy wrote extensively about the food preservative antioxidant BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) in their book, Life Extension—A Practical, Scientific Approach. They described BHT’s many uses—especially as a premier life-extending antioxidant,1 and for its ability to rapidly resolve herpes lesions.
As described by Pearson and Shaw, I routinely prescribe BHT for the treatment and prevention of herpes outbreaks. When lesions are present, 2,000 mg per day of BHT, in divided doses, results in the rapid resolution and healing of the lesions in several days. For those who experience periodic recurrences, if this dose of BHT is taken at the first sign that the lesions are imminent (i.e., redness, itching, tingling), the typical herpetic lesions will likely not appear. For those who experience herpes outbreaks at monthly intervals or less, I recommend 500 mg (more or less) each day for preventive purposes.
Complete dosing information for treatment and preventive purposes can be found in the free, downloadable e-book by Steven Fowkes and John Mann, Wipe Out Herpes with BHT.2 Unfortunately, there is no cure for herpes—but it can be prevented and controlled, with BHT.
By the way, a recent paper has found that BHT is naturally produced by freshwater phytoplankton.3
Good luck. Let us know how you do.
